Sumatran orangutan’s description

Like the chimpanzee, I am very intelligent and know how to use tools to feed me. I live almost exclusively in trees, where I have a crucial role : I carry and spread many seeds in my fur, which contributes to the forests good health !

Where do I live ?

As my name tells it, I only live in Sumatra, an Indonesian island.

I am particularly threatened by deforestation. Men deliberately burn the trees where I live to transform my territory in palm oil plantations. I am also often hunted or changed into a pet.

I am very protected : It is strictly forbidden to capture, hurt, kill, possess, trade or even transport me ! Several NGO’s like WWF take action to ensure that my numbers stabilize. Even UNESCO established a program to defend me since 2001 !
