Okapi

Okapia johnstoni

Okapi’s description

It is often said that I look like a zebra or a horse, but I belong to the giraffe family. Besides, they call me the wood giraffe. Like my cousin, I have a long tongue (30 to 50cm) that allows me to reach the leaves high up.

Where do I live ?

I only live in the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Which threats ?

I have been discovered in 1901 only, but I am already severely threatened ! The hunting for my meat and my skin, and the forest exploitation for wood, are the main causes of my loss.

Kiwiwho’s word to save the okapi

I live in a country politically instable. Armed groups make war on one another on my territory and prevent conservation measures to help me.
