Ganges river dolphin’s description

I have the peculiarity to be a fresh water dolphin and, since 2009, to be India’s national aquatic animal ! I have a long rostrum which allows me to flush my preys out of the river mud. I am almost blind but I have an excellent sonar.

I live in India and in some bordering countries : Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh.

Which threats ?

As my name indicates, I live in the Ganges, which is the most polluted river in the world. Moreover, dams and diversion channels disrupting the water flow disturb me a lot to breed and feed.

In 2016, the Indian government decided to set up a conservation program dedicated to me. A large river cleaning operation will be undertaken and my hunt, which is already totally forbidden, will be more severely punished.
