European bison

Bison bonasus

European bison’s description

I am impressive by my size, but I am totally herbivore ! I live in the forests, in herds couting 10 to 30 members and lead by a female. My american cousin lives in plains and his herds can exceed 100 members.

Where do I live ?

I live in the eastern Europe countries : Poland, Lituania, Ukraine, Slovakia and Russia.

Which threats ?

In the 19th century, my numbers dropped because of the competition between herbivores, but in the 20th century, the first World War and poverty provoked a spate of poaching. Moreover, as I live in forests, I am very sensitive to the disruptions of my Aboutment.

Kiwiwho’s word to save the european bison

During the 1920’s, my specie has been exteminated in its natural form. By then, I survived in zoos, through 54 of us only. But thanks to several reintroductions, about 1800 of us live now in the wild and 1400 in captivity.
