California condor

Gymnogyps californianus

California condor’s description

I am one of the biggest bird in the world ! Powerful and enduring, I can fly up to 150km in a day without fatigue. Nevertheless, I spend more time in my nest than in the air : I like to smooth my feathers, to enjoy the sun and clean myself after a nice meal !

Where do I live ?

I live on the west coast of the United States, mainly in the Grand Canyon national park.

Which threats ?

Men hunt with ammo containing lead. When I feed on left over carcasses, I swallow it and poison myself… It is the main cause of my loss.

Kiwiwho’s word to save the California condor

I have been reintroduced in several american national parks, but only 250 of mine are still free. To save me, we should continue to gradually reintroduce me in my natural habitat, monitor hunting and reduce the use of lead in ammo.
