Southern cassowary

Casuarius casuarius

Southern cassowary’s description

My name comes from the bony crest on my head. My legs are endowed with 3 fingers ; The second one ends with a 12cm claw as dangerous as a knife, it is why I am sometimes considered as the most dangerous bird in the world.

Where do I live ?

I principally hide in the tropical forests of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, but also in Australia.

Which threats ?

I am a traditional target for hunters, which drove to my absolute loss in some regions. However, the main threat weighing on me is probably deforestation, especially important in Indonesia.

Kiwiwho’s word to save the southern cassowary

If my small population does not appear to be in danger in Australia, We don’t really know how much deforestation and urbanization affects me elsewhere… Yet, my existence is crucial : I spread seeds in the forest and, therefore, contribute to its protection.
