Okarito kiwi

Apteryx rowi

Okarito kiwi’s description

I belong to the birds family indeed, but I can’t fly. I like to hide during the day, but at night, I leave my burrow and look for insects, small snails or worms. I also like to eat the fruits that fell on the ground.

Where do I live ?

I live in the small forest of Okarito, in New-Zealand.

Which threats ?

We are in danger because men steal our territory by cutting our forests. Stoats and wild cats attack our nest and our young ones to feed.

Kiwiwho’s word to save the Okarito kiwi

To save us from extinction, men take our eggs and put them in secured places, on an island without any predator where we grow. When we are big enough to fend for ourselves, they take us back home to breed and perpetuate the specie.
