Giant otter

Pteronura brasiliensis

Giant otter’s description

In the water, I am a dreaded predator, I use my webbed feet, my very sensitive whiskers and my performing eyes to hunt fish. Even if I seem harmless, I sit at the top of the food chain. If I am hungry, I can even attack caimans or snakes !

Where do I live ?

I like to swim in the rivers and lakes of the brazilian tropical forest, but I can also be found in Venezuela, in Paraguay or in Guyana.

Which threats ?

Curiosity is a big flaw… When I see a man on my territory, I don’t hide. Hence, I am an easy target for poachers. Moreover, the water quality of my rivers worsens and becomes polluted.

Kiwiwho’s word to save the giant otter

Poaching has been reduced a lot ever since the law protects me. In order to raise my numbers again, the protected areas should be enlarged, the fishermen sensitized about the importance of my presence, and the rivers’ pollution limited.
