Carribean monk seal

Monachus tropicalis

Carribean monk seal’s description

I loved to spend time in the water ! Contrary to many seals, I lived in the tropics and thus did not need much fat to protect me from cold.

Where did the Carribean monk seal live?

I lived in the Carribean hot waters where I have been discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1494.

Why did the Carribean monk seal disappear?

Since my discovery, I’ve been hunted so that men could use my skin, my meat and my fat. I was a good swimmer but, when I rested on land, I was rather clumsy so rather vulnerable.

I can’t be saved anymore, but two species very close to me still exist : The Mediterranean monk seal and the Hawaïan one ! Both are endangered : If nothing is done, they may end up having the same fate as me !
