Australian sealion

Neophoca Gray

Australian sealion’s description

On the contrary of many otters or seals, I am at ease on earth, which notably allows me to find a shelter in sand dunes or, if the forecast worsens, in the vegetation. I can climb on rocks, and have once even been found 10km inland !

Where do I live ?

I can only be found on the australian coasts, mainly in the west and south-west of the country.

Which threats ?

Before, I was a target of choice for fishermen, which conducted to my extinction in some regions. Now, law protects me, but I face other threats : water pollution, global warming, incidental captures…

Kiwiwho’s word to save the australian sealion

Fishing interdiction managed to stabilize my numbers. Today, touristic activities develop because men like to swim by my side, but this practice must remain limited to not disturb me.
